Snapshots & backups

Understand the two recovery paths, create a snapshot, and verify a restore before you depend on it.

On this page

Choose the recovery path you need

Server snapshots are image-based recovery points managed in the Snapshots tab. You can create named snapshots and restore available ones through the console.

Native automatic backups are an optional service offered during configuration. They are separate from the console’s snapshot list. Contact Support to request a native backup restore and confirm the recovery points available for your server.

Weekly automatic backup in the Snapshots tab uses the snapshot system. When enabled, it keeps the two newest automatic snapshots and leaves named snapshots alone. If named snapshots fill the limit, automatic snapshots pause.

Create a named snapshot

Open an active server and select Snapshots. The tab shows the current count and limit.

  1. Give the snapshot a name that identifies the change or recovery point.
  2. Select Take snapshot.
  3. Wait for In progress to clear and the snapshot to become available.
  4. If it fails or the limit is reached, review the displayed state before retrying.

Restore a snapshot

A restore replaces the server’s current data with the selected recovery point and interrupts service. Save changes made since that snapshot if you need them.

  1. Choose an available snapshot and select Restore.
  2. Read the replacement warning and type the server hostname.
  3. Confirm Restore now and wait for the server to return to an active state.
  4. Check Access for updated credentials or notices, then reconnect.
  5. Verify files, applications, and data against the expected recovery point.

Verify recovery

For an initial recovery test, use a disposable server. Create a small test file, record its contents or checksum, and take a snapshot. Wait until the snapshot is available, then change the file.

Restore that snapshot and confirm the original file returns. Also check SSH access and any application service you expect to recover. Repeat the application-level test when your recovery process changes.
